It's been a while since I've done anything about color guides. A while back I put out a color guide for Luna based on her appearance in the season one pilot and the comic con poster. Now that the Season 2 episode Luna Eclipsed has rolled around, Luna's design received a bit of an overhaul, putting her a little more on par with Princess Celestia. This means that the existing guide is no longer accurate.

At some point, I'll consider making another guide for Luna based on her new design. Fortunately, the high-res preview still posted on the MLP facebook is easily corrected since there is a known-good in the scene (Twilight). Luna's new design is some of her old with a bit of Nightmare Moon thrown in. There was even a few animation errors with bits of her old hair thrown in for good measure, so it looks like her new mane was a later addition.

Unfortunately, Luna only exists in her night palette in this entire episode, but even with correction I can see that several of her primary colors have changed significantly. Her coat (body fill and stroke) is a darker, less saturated purple, while her mane strokes are now a bright purple. No more contrast problems of her mane against her body. Her greaves / hoof shoes have also turned into more magenta purplish colors as well (though note the one in the image is on her shadow side, so it is slightly darker than her non-shadow side). Her eyes are still the same color. Her cutie mark, crown, and necklace are all now consistent in their fills, as they've been changed to pure black. The stroke of the crown now matches the stroke of the necklace, too.

The transparency in her hair is achieved by about an 80% normal opacity (alpha blend), though I wonder whether the actual transaprent fill is the same as the stroke color. My math says no, but only slightly, so the hair stroke set to a lower brightness yields a similar effect after the alpha blend. However, there's generational loss in place, so there is some room for error.

So, stay tuned for some time in the future when the new guide will be out - without an official day palette, it'll take a while before I can offer an opinion. In the interim, please don't use Luna's night colors if she's in daylight.

It's been 5 years since this entry was written, and the last comment is 3 years old. While I can just go and use the exact colors given in her MLP Wikia profile, a color guide from you wouldn't hurt since it provides another point of comparison. Then again there's that vector club and their guides.

So, what are you planning with these guides ? It certainly seems you have zero intention to create anything.

FWIW, this is the link to Luna's S3 gallery on MLP Wikia where you can find many daytime shots (might be low-quality, I haven't checked better): mlp.wikia.com/wiki/Princess_Lu…
