They come a-trottin' just as fast as they dare, 'Cause everypony's crazy for a sharp dressed mare.
I've always been a huge fan of ZZ Top, and the trio of Deguello,El Loco, and Eliminator are one of the best sequences of albums released in sequence in rock and roll.
The original Eliminator cover is an illustration by Tom Hunnicutt of Eliminator, Billy Gibbons' 1933 Ford Coupe. I had to think hard on which ZZ Top album to use. Eliminator is by far the most famous of them all, but my personal favorite is Deguello. Unfortunately, Deguello translates even worse to a parody than Eliminator, so the popular choice won out.
Making a pony related version of this album is, thematically, very difficult. Ponies don't have cars, unless you count the Applejack toy truck. I could have made a pony-themed repaint of the Eliminator coupe, but I didn't think that would be right, either. So I went out into left field and tried to keep the "lighting up the night" concept with a different idea. Twilight's eyes and the pages of the book are meant to capture the curves and lights of the coupe, and of course the Eliminator colors live on in the book cover. Putting this together wasn't easy, but I think it came out all right in the end.
