Twilight Sparkle Color Guide 2.0 [UPDATED] by kefkafloyd Twilight Sparkle Color Guide 2.0 [UPDATED] by kefkafloyd

It appears you don't have PDF support in this web browser. Download PDF

New and improved!

All of the color guides are getting a revamp, and Twilight is the first to go. The guides are all now two pages, one for digital applications (such as vectors, painting in Photoshop, 3D modeling, etc) and the other for print applications (customs, merch, T-shirts, et cetera). The PNG preview for the digital guide should be OK to use as well, so the PDF is optional.

If you use Google Chrome or Safari, they will attempt to open the file in-line with Google Docs PDF viewer. DO NOT EYEDROP THOSE COLORS. SAVE THE PDF FILE. The Google Docs viewer displays in a very low bit depth that results in dithering of the colors. Until Deviantart gives me a way to disable this, you should use the download file link to view the guide!

They are also now more space efficient, and will be able to scale better with ponies that have more colors than normal.

The Digital guides aim to be as close to the show as possible, while the print guides aim to be as close to official merch as possible. When there's no merch of that pony (e.g. background ponies) then the print colors will be based on my conversions which will aim to reproduce the show without looking too weird or have obvious gamut problems.

It is safe to eyedrop the digital colors or use the hex/RGB codes - the swatches should match up just fine. Just make sure you're working in sRGB color mode.

For the merch guides, the spot colors are rendered using CMYK alternate color space. This is based on my own examinations of the merch boxes, where the spot colors are simulated straight to process anyway.

The small circles next to the hex codes don't have the colours the hex codes say (at least, according to inkscape), and the colour for shadow outlines (like, the one right in the image on Twilight's right hind leg.) isn't defined either.
Thanks though, still helpful.

Are there any specific programs that work with this better--like PhotoShop and the like? My brother is curious since he's branching out how to do things.

I really enjoy looking at this in-depth guide--it's useful to have the certain colors since it's kind of hard at times figuring out which ones are suitable. Thanks for this. :D

Your browser should save a PDF, or you can just type the equivalents into the color picker into MS paint.

It did, but I saved it, and it opens up in Adobe Reader. Is that supposed to happen?

Yes. That way you can copy and paste the codes into the hex field in the color picker.

I don't think Paint supports that. It has all these different 3 digit codes. Any suggestions?

MS Paint sucks.
I know, that's no answer to your question, but I would highly recommend you have a look at paint.net, it's basically an improved version of MS Paint.
If you absolutely want to use it, you can use this tool to convert the color codes.

I've used your v2.0 guides to remake my Unofficial Soundtrack CD covers as vectors. They are greatly improved as a result of your hard work. Thanks!

I have made palettes for Expression Design, GIMP/Inkscape and plan to make some for Photoshop as well. I'll make these available for download in my SkyDrive public folder as they become available.

For some reason, all the version 2.0 PDFs are not thumbnailed correctly in Windows Explorer with Fast Picture Viewer Codec Pack installed (they turn out really tiny with lots of whitespace). However, all the version 1.0 PDFs thumbnail OK.

Is there a reason for using PDF over a lossless image format such as PNG/TIFF?

They print nicer, both files are contained in one file, and browsers generally do not handle CMYK images properly. For the print guides, the latter is very important.

I'm unsure why the 2.0 ones thumbnail that way, I'm guessing Microsoft is thumbnailing them incorrectly. Not the first time they would make such a mistake.

You can always rasterize the PDFs, by the way. Just drag them into PS, pick a page, rasterize and save and you'll have an image. I do this, in fact, when I work with them in PS.

I'll get the codec developer to look into it. I just wanted to touch base with you first in case the problem was something PDF-related that you recognized.

Usually the reason why that happens is because the program that reads the PDF reads the wrong box information or does not respect the Meda Box's true bounds.

My brain, why is there two color versions? why not just use the second one, it's nicer.

Because colors are different on TV and print. There's demand for colors that are exactly ones used in the flash assets versus the ones used in the print/merchandise art. They both have their use.

I look at the digital palette and it feels like it's really excessively neon-y, but when I check it against screenshots, it's totally accurate. Weird! Maybe it's because the background isn't actually a mass of bright pastels.

In any event, very nice!

Any application worth its salt should have an eyedropper that you can click on the individual swatch colors and pull the color.

I wonder if you could add a color guide for traditional painting. I had trouble figuring out how to mix paint to match Twilight's mane color. I tried purple and black. Pink and purple. Anyway, just a idea.
