Rarity Color Guide 2.0 [UPDATED] by kefkafloyd Rarity Color Guide 2.0 [UPDATED] by kefkafloyd

It appears you don't have PDF support in this web browser. Download PDF

New and improved!

All of the color guides are getting a revamp. The guides are all now two pages, one for digital applications (such as vectors, painting in Photoshop, 3D modeling, etc) and the other for print applications (customs, merch, T-shirts, et cetera). The PNG preview for the digital guide should be OK to use as well, so the PDF is optional.

If you use Google Chrome or Safari, they will attempt to open the file in-line with Google Docs PDF viewer. DO NOT EYEDROP THOSE COLORS. SAVE THE PDF FILE. The Google Docs viewer displays in a very low bit depth that results in dithering of the colors. Until Deviantart gives me a way to disable this, you should use the download file link to view the guide!

They are also now more space efficient, and will be able to scale better with ponies that have more colors than normal.

The Digital guides aim to be as close to the show as possible, while the print guides aim to be as close to official merch as possible. When there's no merch of that pony (e.g. background ponies) then the print colors will be based on my conversions which will aim to reproduce the show without looking too weird or have obvious gamut problems.

It is safe to eyedrop the digital colors or use the hex/RGB codes - the swatches should match up just fine. Just make sure you're working in sRGB color mode.

For the merch guides, the spot colors are rendered using CMYK alternate color space. This is based on my own examinations of the merch boxes, where the spot colors are simulated straight to process anyway.

On some of Hasbro's vectors of Rarity, the incidental palette (mainly Mouth and Tongue colors) are swapped from the usual burgundy and orange to a different magenta and pink, which I do believe is a mistake that they made.

Rarity's horn glow is the same color as her cutie mark, the light blue.

If Rarity's body was white, her eyes would blend in with her color and things would look weird. If you take colors from screenshots from the show, she is actually about this shade of grey listed on this guide.

Pure white is 255/255/255, which Rarity is not. She's more of a cool gray. If she was pure white, her coat would blend into her eyes.

I also couldn't get the exact colors because Home Depot insists on NOT using the Pantone system, so I got as close as I could.

It is likely a problem with your browser. Deviantart, in their infinite wisdom, tried to implement an inline PDF viewer, and it does not work very well most of the time. You should download the file by clicking the download link.

What does the 60% means? Like is that the Opacity? ;o
Reply
:iconkefkafloyd:
kefkafloyd Featured By Owner Oct 9, 2011  Professional General Artist
It means a 60% tint. In Illustrator, you can set the swatch to be a tint percentage of the spot color. You can do this with spot plates too in PS.

If you're working in straight RGB or CMYK in Photoshop, though, it's better to just eyedrop off the swatch after opening the PDF in Photoshop. It will handle the conversions for you.
